MODESTO, CA - The Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation is announcing a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the homicide of 19-year-old Gustavo Orozco. Gustavo was murdered on June 1, 2009. “The Foundation creates an opportunity for the community to assist law enforcement by bringing those responsible to justice,” said Sheriff Adam Christianson. “Sometimes it only takes one person coming forward and sharing the information to solve the case.”
On June 1, 2009 shortly before 11:00 PM Sheriff's Deputies responded to reports of shots fired at 4900 block of Yosemite Blvd in Empire. Upon arrival Deputies located two victims of gun shot wounds. Both were transported to local hospitals. One of the victims, a 19-year-old Hispanic male, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The second victim, another 19-year-old Hispanic male, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
According to Sheriff’s Detectives, the victims had stopped to eat at a taco truck when they were confronted by a group of subjects asking the victims about gang associations. The victims attempted to leave the area when the subjects attacked them. “We know there’re several witness to this homicide,” said Detective Jon McQueary. “We are asking those witnesses to contact investigators.”
“The Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation knows reward money can make a difference because The Foundation's reward money has already assisted in the location of nine missing persons, the apprehension of 42 murder suspects, and 3 kidnappers of young children, and one suspect charged with attempted murder of a peace officer,” said Scott Webb, Executive Director for The Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation. “We currently have 37 suspects in custody in ten states.”
To date the Foundation has paid a total of $294,243 in rewards to citizens who did the right thing by coming forward and sharing the information they had regarding these cases. We all have a responsibility to do our part to help make our community a safe place.
Carole and Juli Sund and Silvina Pelosso were the three women sightseers who were missing and later found murdered near Yosemite National Park in February of 1999. While they were missing, Carole Sund’s parents, Francis and Carole Carrington, at the request of the FBI, posted rewards both for their safe return and for information leading to the whereabouts of their rental car. The Carrington’s believe that the posting of these rewards and the media attention they received contributed to the car being located and gave them the first break in their case. They were thankful that they had the financial means to offer these rewards and it’s because of this that they have started The Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation. This foundation was established to assist in cases such as the case of Gustavo Orozco, which is a similar circumstance as the Carrington’s in that Gustavo was a homicide victim.
