MODESTO, CA - Sheriff’s Deputies Juan Alanis and Pedro Zamora have been selected to receive the American Red Cross Workplace Hero Award and Deputy Cody Gunsolley was selected for the Good Samaritan-Adult Award. All three deputies will receive the award at the American Red Cross “Hero’s Breakfast” on June 3, 2009 at the Double Tree Hotel Ballroom in Modesto. The ceremony will start at 7:30am to 9:00am and admission to the event is $30 per person.
On September 28, 2008 Deputy Cody Gunsolley was driving home with his family on I-5 near Hood Franklin Road in Sacramento County when he noticed a vehicle driving northbound in the southbound lanes. Deputy Gunsolley attempted to warn other drivers on the freeway by flashing in lights. The wrong way driver then crashed into another vehicle. Both vehicles immediately caught fire with people trapped inside. Deputy Gunsolley was able to pull 2 people from the burning vehicle before the fire department arrived on scene.
On January 30, 2009 Deputy Pedro Zamora was driving to work when he noticed smoke from the Greenbriar Apartments on Coffee Road in Modesto. Deputy Zamora when to investigate the smoke and noticed the smoke was coming from the roof at the rear of the apartment complex. He called 9-1-1 and started banging on doors to wake people up. He also helped one person who was attempting to escape out of a second story window. The 3-alarm fire caused about $1.5 million in damages and damaged 16 apartments according to the Modesto Fire Department.
On April 19, 2009 Deputy Juan Alanis was driving to work when he noticed dark smoke in the air. He followed the column of smoke and located the source as the Campos Verde Apartments on West Granger Road. Deputy Alanis called 9-1-1 and started knocking on doors to wake residents up. At one of the apartments, a panicked female told Deputy Alanis that two other people where inside of her apartment. Deputy Alanis went inside to help the two people and noticed that this was the apartment that was on fire. He was able to wake both males and help them get out of the burning apartment before the fire department arrived on scene. According to the Modesto Fire Department the fire caused about $10,000 in damages to the one-bedroom apartment.
