CERES, CA - Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department hostage negotiators talked down a barricaded, suicidal man this afternoon in rural Ceres.
At 2:44 PM, Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 5300 #Block of Blaker Rd in rural Ceres to investigate the report of a suicidal man. Dispatchers learned from the man’s mother that he was locked inside his room with a firearm and refused to come out.
When deputies arrived on scene a perimeter was quickly established and hostage negotiators arrived shortly after. Negotiators were able to communicate with the suicidal man using a cell phone. Negotiators were eventually able to convince the man to throw the firearm out of his bedroom window. Several minutes later the man voluntarily walked out of his back door and surrendered to deputies.
“This is exactly how we want these situations to turn out,” said Lieutenant Mario Cisneros, who also commands the Sheriff’s Department’s Hostage Negotiation Team, “everybody involved in this incident will be walking away unharmed.”
After being taken into custody the young man, whose name is being withheld, was transported to Doctor’s Behavioral Health Center in Modesto.
The Sheriff’s Department has had a Hostage Negotiation Team since the early 1980’s. Members of the team are enrolled in schools specializing in crisis intervention. The team consists of seven members of the Sheriff’ Department who train monthly with surrounding teams in the area.
