MODESTO, CA - Deputy Juan Alanis had an unusual commute to his training day this morning. At about 6:00 AM while on the way to a training event at the Modesto Reservoir, Deputy Alanis noticed dark smoke in the air. “I could tell that it was a structure fire by the color of the smoke,” he said. Deputy Alanis continued driving down Briggsmore Avenue when he was eventually able to track down the fire at the Campos Verde Apartment Complex, 601 West Granger Ave, Modesto.
Deputy Alanis immediately phoned dispatch to update them on the location of the fire. Deputy Alanis remained on the phone with emergency dispatcher Tina Applegate until fire personnel arrived. “He kept calm the entire time and did an outstanding job,” said Applegate.
Deputy Alanis could see the flames coming from the back patio of an apartment. Without hesitation Deputy Alanis ran to the apartment and knocked loudly and received an answer at the door from a panicked female. After learning from the female that there were two others inside, Deputy Alanis walked into the burning apartment.
Inside the living room, Deputy Alanis found an incapacitated male asleep on the couch. “The flames were only feet away from where he was sleeping,” Deputy Alanis was able to wake the male up and another male that was sleeping in the bedroom.
“Deputy Alanis’ brave actions this morning truly show his dedication to public safety,” Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said, “Even when he was not in uniform he was willing to step up and serve the public.”
