SHERIFF’S HELICOPTER RESCUES INJURED TEENAGER FROM STEEP CANYON

March 2, 2009

TRACY, CA - Yesterday at about 3:30 pm, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Helicopter was requested by Alameda County Fire to assist with a rescue at Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area located in the southern hills of San Joaquin and Alameda Counties. The rescue was for a male teenager who crashed on his dirt bike in a steep canyon and medical vehicles were unable to get to him.

The Sheriff’s Helicopter arrived on scene within 15 minutes of being requested and found the 13-year-old victim that had crashed during a race and had fallen approximately 50 feet down a cliff. Fire and medical crews were able to get to him on foot, but had no way of transporting him out due to the muddy, wet, rainy conditions. The Sheriff’s Helicopter was able to safely secure the victim to a long line at the end of the helicopter. The victim was lifted out of the canyon to an awaiting medical air ambulance preventing further injury and reducing the time it took to get the victim the critical care he needed.

“When time is so critical there is no exception to what the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department helicopter and crew can provide to our region,” said Air Support Unit supervisor Sgt Rob Latapie. “Getting victims the critical care needed as well as preventing further injury to victims during ground extraction from dangerous areas is priceless.”
