FOUR IN-CUSTODY AFTER IMPERSONATING OFFICERS AND ATTEMPTING HOME INVASION

February 25, 2009

RIVERBANK, CA - Deputies from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department arrested four people in connection with an attempted home invasion robbery that occurred in the City of Riverbank Tuesday afternoon. During the attempted robbery, suspects identified themselves as police officers to the victims.

At approximately 1:30 PM the victim received a knock on the front door of her home in the 2500 block of Novi Way. When the victim looked outside her window she observed two Hispanic males wearing business type attire. The two suspects identified themselves as peace officers and demanded she open her door. The victim suspected something was amiss and used her phone to call 911. Deputies from Riverbank Police Services immediately responded.

The victim and several children hid in a bedroom closet while on the phone with emergency dispatchers. While speaking with dispatchers she heard the sounds of glass breaking from the rear of her residence. The victim recognized the sounds coming from the back sliding glass door. Although the back door was broken, suspects were unable to gain entry into her house.

Deputies arrived on scene and observed one suspect standing in the driveway of the victim’s home. The suspect noticed deputies were arriving and fled through the victim’s back yard. As deputies pursued they observed a total of four suspects jumping fences attempting to flee. Deputies established a perimeter and began an in-depth search of the area. Deputies located three of the suspects walking in the area of Bracco St/Portrait Ln. The fourth suspect was located on foot near Gallery Ln/Homewood Dr.

The suspects are identified as Eliezer Prado, 24, Arnold Quintana, 18, Jose Cabrera, 21, all of San Jose and Moises Lopez, 24, of Campbell. All four suspects were booked into Stanislaus County Jail on suspicion of attempting a home invasion robbery, impersonating a police officer and criminal conspiracy. Additionally both Lopez and Cabrera were charged with brandishing an imitation firearm and unlawful use of a taser. Bail amounts were set at $75,000 for all four suspects.

During subsequent investigation of the robbery, detectives were able to link one of the suspects to a burglary that had occurred on Monday (02/23) in Riverbank. During the burglary, the homeowner interrupted several men as they were stealing items from his garage. The suspects had fled the scene when deputies arrived. The victim was able to identify Moises Lopez as one of the men who had burglarized his garage. The investigation into both cases is ongoing.
