PRESS RELEASE  For Immediate Release

COMMUNITY FORUM ON GANGS IN STANISLAUS COUNTY
May 2, 2008
MODESTO, CA - On Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at 7:00 pm, several government agencies in Stanislaus County will host a community discussion forum on gangs and violence in our community.  The forum, entitled Break the Cycle, will be held in the cafeteria at Modesto High School, 18 H Street in Modesto.

The forum is hosted by The Modesto Police Department, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office, the City of Modesto, the County of Stanislaus, Modesto City Schools, and the Stanislaus County Office of Education.  The forum is designed to educate the community on how to recognize gangs, what type of activity gangs are involved in, and what to do if their loved ones are involved in gangs.

The forum comes on the heels of three separate homicides within the last week in Modesto and a number of shootings in the unincorporated areas of south Modesto.  "There is a lot of increased tension right now because of recent gang violence," said Modesto Police Chief Roy Wasden.  "We want our community to have as much information as possible about what can be done to prevent future violence."

Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson agrees.  "One of the most important things we can do right now is provide people with information and resources," said Christianson.  "There are mothers and fathers out there whose children are involved in gangs or are curious about them.  There are resources available that can help."

Several resource booths will be at the forum with brochures and materials available to attendees.  Staff members from the Stanislaus County Weed and Seed project, the City of Modesto Parks and Recreation Department, as well as the Modesto Police Department Wake Up program and Crime Prevention Units will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about available resources.

Fliers with information about this forum are available at the Modesto Police Department website at www.ModestoPolice.com.  They have also been distributed to all Modesto high schools and junior highs as well as a number of elementary schools.  Translation devices will be available at the forum for those who speak Spanish.
