METHAMPHETAMINE AWARENESS

from Sheriff Les Weidman As a Law Enforcement officer, I have seen the impact of meth on not only the users, but innocent children and virtually entire neighborhoods as a direct result of exposure to meth labs that seem to spring up at any location you can possibly imagine. From a garage in your neighborhood, near a school, or a barn in the country, they can be anywhere. The meth menace has grown to very alarming levels over the past several years. A study conducted by the KOCH Crime Institute revealed that there is increasing usage among persons 18 years and younger. It is estimated that the Central Valley from Bakersfield to Sacramento is responsible for 60% of the drug produced in the United States. Methamphetamine is considered the fastest growing illegal drug in this country and rivals that of heroin and cocaine in addiction. The predators that produce meth care nothing about harm to individual users, neighborhoods, and the environment and in some cases even their own children. Children of Meth users are often neglected and abused. Children living at makeshift meth labs live amid toxic chemicals and suffer from long term exposure. Clandestine meth labs are responsible for dumping literally thousands of gallons of wastes that find their way into our rivers and our valley farmlands. The taxpayers of California spend approximately $10 million each year on efforts to cleanup these hazardous waste sites alone. |
